FOUR OF MY BEAUTIFUL CHICKENS
The gray ones are Sapphire Gems and the tan ones are Buff Brahmas.
AMERAUCANAS - BEAUTIFUL TOO
One of them seems to like it when I pick her up.
Chickens are a fairly recent addition to what I do on my semi-rural property. I think It was in May of 2024 that I got my 6 chickens. As I have explained elsewhere on this website, I was building a new fence for a couple of dogs that showed up in my neighborhood and I decided to build a fence for some chickens. My next door neighbor has chickens, so that might have inspired me to get chickens, also.
The fenced in area (a run) I built was about 8' X 50' and the fence is 6' chain link. I bought a small coup from Tractor Supply which is supposed to house 6 chickens. After I built the fenced in area, I learned that chickens can be the victims of various predators, expecially raccoons, so I have added mesh fencing to cover the run. The run is somewhat crude, but so far the 6 chickens have survived.
I have plans to move them to a larger run - maybe 30' X 30' and establish a larger area that is fairly safe that might be considered a free-range area. Unfortunately, they have totally destroyed the vegetation in their run and they need more space, because they love to eat vegetation and insects. I might get about 4 more chickens once I have more space for them to run around.
So far they have been producing a fair number of eggs - more than I can use. I take most of them into KKFI, the not-for-profit radio station where I am a volunteer and they love them.
